Woman Police Chief Slain in Meoqui

The woman leading the police department in the northern Mexican town of Meoqui was slain while driving to work, the Chihuahua state Attorney General’s Office said Monday.

Garcia was found fatally shot in her car at a spot near her home about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the town center, the AG’s office said.

Authorities suspect the police chief, whose prior experience included working as an investigator for the federal AG’s office, was murdered by gunmen working for drug traffickers or other organized crime elements.

“La Jefa,” as she was known to her police agents, didn’t carry weapons or have bodyguards.

“If you don’t owe anything, you don’t fear anything,” she was fond of saying when asked why she didn’t have security.

Mexican media reported that Garcia was single and lived with her parents, whom she supported financially.

Does anyone understand the logic here of a police chief in a violent city, part of a country where police chiefs are routinely murdered, not taking steps to protect herself? Is this a cultural thing? She lives at home with her parents, carries no weapons herself, and does not have a security detail.

Godspeed Garcia.

When I first read about her I could hardly believe she took the job let alone was being so passive in her position. It would be hard to defend oneself armed with these drug traffickers but I’d sure as heck want a chance!

Maybe she was always told by her mom” violence never solves anything” or perhaps she was trying to old saying” catch more flies with honey than vinegar” either way wow. A little foolish now her inaction has cost her, her life and basically her parents as well since she was the bread winner there. Please God don’t let me die with my last thought as” I should have been ready or have had my weapon”
