Just one more law and everything will be perfect.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Karla O’Malley was upset when she heard that an Arkansas teenager she had stopped to comfort after a Christmas Eve car accident in Overland Park had died. But she was outraged when she went to post condolences on a memorial website for the teenager and found that it included hurtful and offensive comments about the boy’s death.

In response, O’Malley, of Overland Park, has collected 200 supporters for an online petition seeking a federal law that would ban the posting of such comments and photos on website memorial pages. She also is seeking help from U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder, R-Kan. whose office is reviewing the matter.

If there was just one thing kids could get out of High School civics it would be this: Every law comes with a S.W.A.T. team attached. Ultimately any law passed has to be enforced. The focus on ‘forced‘. If you’re not willing to see a bunch of heavily armed government agents kick down a door and kill someone or be killed themselves, then you do not need to pass that law. People are killed all the time by police enforcing non-violent, and even non-drug, related crimes.

So Ms. O’Malley, are you willing to see a government S.W.A.T. team kill someone while enforcing your ban on posting offensive comments? Frankly to be precise, you should be willing to pull the trigger yourself. Hiring others to execute force on your behalf does not absolve you of the moral culpability of the use of that force.
