Jennifer Hawke-Pettit: Justice Part 1

Steven Hayes has been sentenced to death for what he and Joshua Komisarjevsky did to Jennifer Hawke-Pettit and her two daughters. May he rest in pieces.

I can’t belive these poor people have to do this all over again for scumbag Joshua Komisarjevsky.

Generally I am against the death penalty because I think it is applied too readily in cases with only circumstantial evidence or limited and unconvincing eyewitness testimony such as jail house confessions. But in this case, I hope to see Steven and Joshua die. They deserve it if anyone ever did. If executions were conducted in public like they should be, then I would go to see it.

Parents Melanie and Aaron Richman Attack Carjacker in Kansas City to Save Their Baby

They were standing just a few yards away, talking to family in the final hours of a long road trip, when a man jumped into their idling car at a Kansas City, Mo., gas station and sped off with their 6-month-old daughter strapped in the back seat.

The parents run the car down, bust out the windows and proceed to beat the guy. Never give up, never surrender! Watch the video available at the link.

Cops say you should call them and not be a “hero”. I wonder how that would have worked out here?

Doesn’t she shop at WalMart?

According to KOCO:

Officers said a [Midwest City, OK] woman woke up to find two men breaking into her home.

The Illinois State Police knows a thing or two about how to handle someone attacking you and have some recommended weapons for you to use:

  1. nail file
  2. rat tail comb
  3. teasing brush
  4. pens and pencils
  5. keys
  6. anything rigid

If none of those work they recommend throwing up on them. This poor Oklahoma woman apparently did not have any recommended weapons like a nail file or teasing brush. She had to make do with common household items, like a handgun:

The woman told police she was asleep with her two young children in the house when a loud noise woke her up. She thought it might have been an earthquake and called her husband at Tinker Air Force Base. After learning no earthquake had been reported, she heard another noise and went to investigate, armed with a handgun.

The woman told police she encountered two people attempting to steal a flat screen television from the living room. She fired several rounds.

One person collapsed immediately and the second opened the front door and ran from the house, [Police Chief Brandon] Clabes said.

One young man is dead, one is in the hospital, and a third is in jail. I hope this mother of two takes time to go to WalMart’s beauty section and properly arm herself against violent attack. Her husband might appreciate it if she fixed herself up a bit too since she lacks even a teasing brush.

Connecticut Sees ‘Red’ After Horrific Home-Invasion Murders

Murder and rape normally are unheard of in places like Cheshire, rated by Money Magazine as one of the best places to live in America. They don’t happen to families like the Petits, all of whom were accomplished, highly respected, and active in community affairs. The horrific home invasion offered Connecticut residents an appalling glimpse of something liberals and Connecticut’s Democratic lawmakers seem unable to understand: criminals who commit unspeakable evil — and the limits of the police’s ability to protect law-abiding citizens from such predatory monsters.

Some of the social aftermath of the murder of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters.

Welcome to my nightmare

It is like a vision out of your worst nightmare – being woken to find a gang of masked youths armed with pitchforks and axes smashing their way into your bedroom in the dead of night.

But in a series of horrific night-time raids these baby-faced schoolboys brought terror to sleeping residents.

via SayUncle and Mail Online.

This is not even close to my worst nightmare. They would be bringing pitchforks to a rifle and pistol fight. Between my wife and I we can bring 80 rounds of aimed fire to the situation within 5 seconds. The easiest part of their night would probably be my ten year old son repeatedly kicking them in the nuts. We would kill them.

If you have the resources, including both money and time, a home invasion is one of the easiest crimes to prepare against. It is your home after all and you have all the time in the world (compared to these creeps) to figure out how to keep them out and how to kill them if they won’t stay out.

Start with these steps:

  1. Big heavy doors with big heavy deadbolt locks; and
  2. Have a policy of always keeping the doors locked, even the doors to the backyard when no family member is out there; and
  3. Install an alarm system, have it wired to every door and window, always have it on, even when you are home; and
  4. Have a dog; a medium size one will do, he doesn’t have to be a killer, he just has to let you know when someone is around your house who shouldn’t be; and
  5. Acquire firearms and train with them, keep them readily available day and night; if you have kids train them to keep away from your guns, but don’t hide them from the kids (they will find them); and
  6. Have a 5 second plan for when goblins with pitchforks kick in your door in the middle of the night.

There are plenty of other things you can do, but steps 1-6 will make you a very hard target.

One other thing you should have is a plan for the aftermath of a home invasion. When the police get there say this:

I was in fear for my life. I want my attorney.

Say nothing else. Trust me, they will understand. That’s what attorneys are for and why the are called “mouth pieces.”

QOTD: Civilization

“There is only a thin veneer of civilization, laws written on paper and enforced by people who are much too far away to intervene right here, right now, standing between you and a guy who wants to tear your throat out…” — The Little Black Book of Violence.

Connecticut Man Could Face Death After Jury Convicts Him in Deadly Home Invasion

Steven Hayes was found guilty Tuesday of capital felony murder in the July 2007 deaths of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her daughters, 17-year-old Hayley and 11-year-old Michaela.

Jurors had begun deliberating Monday afternoon. The same jury must now decide whether Hayes should be executed or be sentenced to life in prison.

Not a big surprise. His lawyer admitted he participated in the home invasion after all. The only big surprise was the events that led up to the wife and two daughters being killed.

Cannon Fodder

I can just see the employment application to the newly created county ambulance service:

  1. Would you be willing to charge into a situation unarmed, with no tactical training, and no backup, and face down an armed gunman to provide medical assistance to your fellow medic who just did the same stupid-ass thing?   YES or NO

Good luck with that.

Sheepdogs in Action

WADSWORTH, Ohio – Wadsworth police say a gun-carrying couple helped them catch a man who was allegedly beating his girlfriend in a parking lot in front of her two small children.

via Police: Gun-carrying couple stops beating.

David doesn’t like it, but I don’t see anything wrong with it. A woman being beaten by a man would have no legal problem from pulling a gun and shooting him. Most women (but not my wife who is 6’3″ and can kick your ass) are physically inferior to most men and a man can do them great bodily harm just with their fists.

“My husband and I both have CCW licenses and we were in fear of her life, and we drew our weapons on him,” Heather Evans told the 911 dispatcher.

which is exactly right. When you intervene in a situation you get whatever legal defense the victim would have had. If the victim can legally use lethal force, then you can legally use lethal force. My wife and I would have handled it differently. She would have indexed her firearm, but kept it in the holster while I would have pulled the guy off and applied whatever non-lethal force was necessary. Only if he produced a weapon would my wife have drawn. But we train that and are capable of pulling it off.

So good on Mr. and Mrs. Evans. They have taken responsibility for their own safety and are even willing to help someone else in need. True sheepdogs. The police didn’t arrive until the bad guy had already fled the scene. But the Evans’ are also an exception to the “No one is coming to help you rule.” I’d like to read about an exception to that rule every day.
